The membership fee obligation applies to all Catholics who are 18 years or older and whose annual income exceeds 15,000 euros, unless there are serious reasons not to pay. The amount of the fee is 1.5% of taxable earned income or equivalent other income. Parishes regularly transfer a portion of the membership fee income to the diocese to support common operations and to assist those parishes that are not self-sufficient.

The membership fee is not merely a recommendation, but a Catholic’s duty to support the material needs of the Church according to their means. This obligation is based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church (2043) and Canon Law (Can. 222 §1). The membership fee is a key part of the Church’s finances, as it covers, among other things, liturgical life, apostolic and charitable activities, and the reasonable maintenance of the clergy.

In recent years, the financial situation of the diocese has been challenging, and the share of membership fee income in the Church’s annual budget has been small. In order to balance the finances, it is important that every adult member pays their membership fee regularly. This ensures the continuity of the Church’s operations and enables investments such as the repair of parish buildings.

The membership fee is thus a concrete way to support the Church and ensure the continuation of its mission. It is also part of a Catholic’s responsibility and solidarity within the Church family.
