Joulutervehdys 2024: Valon juhla
”Ja Sana tuli lihaksi ja asui meidän keskellämme” (Joh. 1:14).
Rakkaat seurakuntalaiset,
Herramme Jeesuksen Kristuksen syntymäjuhla on armon ja totuuden aika:
”Armo ja totuus tapaavat toisensa täällä
vanhurskaus ja rauha antavat suuta toisillensa
uskollisuus versoo maasta
ja vanhurskaus katsoo taivaasta” (Ps. 85:11-12, KR38).
Näitä Psalmin sanoja Kirkko on tulkinnut kertovan inkarnaation salaisuudesta. Tähän sisältyy se ihmeellinen pelastus, josta enkelit lauloivat Betlehemissä: ”maassa rauha ihmisten kesken, joita kohtaan hänellä on hyvä tahto” (Luuk. 2:14). Herran syntymä näyttää meille, että meidän maailmamme ja lähimmäisemme ovat saaneet armon rakastaakseen ja vastaanottaakseen rakkautta. Jumalan Pojan ihmiseksi tuleminen vahvistaa ihmisen suuren arvon. Jokaisessa ihmisessä on jotakin rikasta ja kunnioitettavaa, koska Jumala itse tuli Pojassaan ihmiseksi. Onhan jokainen ihminen Jumalan Pojan ihmisluonnon kaltainen.
Jeesus Kristus on myös jokaisen ihmisen elämän valo. Hän valaisee elämän niin, että näemme kulkea oikeaa tietä ja ymmärrämme olemassaolomme tarkoituksen. Jumalan persoonallisessa Sanassa loistaa todellinen valo. Siellä missä on valo, siellä on elämäkin. Valo ja elämä kuuluvat yhteen (Joh. 1:4). Tämän jo Vanha testamentti näki Kristuksesta: ”Sinun luonasi on elämän lähde, sinun valostasi me saamme valon” (Ps 36:10). Olemme kuuluneet pimeydessä vaeltavaan kansaan, joka näkee suuren Valon (Jes. 9:1), ja Jeesuksen kautta olemme päässeet pimeydestä valoon. Joulu on valon juhla.
Pimeys ei saanut valoa valtaansa, sillä Valo on voimakkaampi kuin pimeys. Kun sytytetään valo, pimeys poistuu. Mitä pimeämpää on syntiinlankeemuksen maailmassa, sitä kirkkaammin armon valo loistaa syntisten ihmisten elämään. Jeesus Kristus on todellinen koko maailman valo, joka loistaa pimeydessä ja valaisee jokaisen ihmisen (Joh. 1:5,9). Tullessaan maailmaan Kristus ei ole torjunut maailmaa eikä paheksunut sitä, koska Hän rakastaa ihmisiä sanomattomasti antaen oman henkensä. Itse asiassa Isä Jumala ”on rakastanut maailmaa niin paljon, että antoi ainoan Poikansa, jottei yksikään, joka häneen uskoo, joutuisi kadotukseen, vaan saisi iankaikkisen elämän” (3:16), vakuuttaa Johanneksen tunnettu pienoisevankeliumi. Rakkaus voittaa kaiken, myös pimeyden.

Christmas greetings 2024: Feast of the Light
"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us" (John 1:14).
Dear parishioners,
The celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ is a time of love and faithfulness:
“Love and faithfulness meet together;
righteousness and peace kiss each other.
Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,
and righteousness looks down from heaven.” (Ps. 85:11-12)
The Church has interpreted these words of the Psalm as telling about the mystery of the Incarnation. This includes the wonderful salvation of which the angels sang in Bethlehem, "on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14). The birth of the Lord shows us, then, that in our world and in our neighbours there is grace for love and receiving it. The incarnation of the Son of God confirms the great dignity of man. There is something rich and honourable in every human being, because God himself became man in his Son. After all, every person is like the human nature of the Son of God.
Jesus Christ is also the light of every person’s life. He illuminates life so that we can see the right path to walk and understand the purpose of our existence. In the personal Word of God, true light shines. Where there is light, there is life. Light and life belong together (John 1:4). The Old Testament already saw this in Christ: “For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.” (Psalm 36:9). We have belonged to a people walking in darkness, who see the great Light (Isaiah 9:1), and through Jesus we have come out of darkness into light. Christmas is the feast of the light.
The darkness could not overcome the light, because the light is more powerful than the darkness. When we turn on the light, the darkness is removed. The darker the world of sin, the brighter the light of grace shines into the lives of sinful people. Jesus Christ is the true light of the whole world, shining in the darkness and illuminating every person (John 1:5,9). When Christ came into the world, He did not reject the world or disapprove of it, because He loves people unspeakably, giving His own life. In fact, God the Father "so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life" (3:16), says the well-known miniature Gospel of John. Love conquers all, even darkness.
With all my heart I wish all of you, dear parishioners and your families, and all people of good will, a very bright and gracious celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ!
