Suomessa on vuodesta 1987 lähtien vietetty ystävänpäivää helmikuun 14. päivänä. Juhlan taustahahmo on 200-luvulla elänyt pyhä Valentinus, rakastavaisten ja kihlautuneiden suojelija ja onnellisen avioliiton takaaja. Pyhästä Valentinuksesta kerrotaan useita legendoja. Yhden legendan mukaan Valentinus vihki luvatta roomalaisia sotilaita ja toimi täten sotapäälliköitä vastaan. Keisari oli kieltänyt sotilailta kihlaukset ja häät huomattuaan, että miehet menivät mieluummin naimisiin ja jäivät kotiin perheensä luo kuin etsivät kunniaa ja mainetta taistelukentiltä. Valentinus oli rakkauden mies ja vihki pareja salaa omassa kodissaan. Toinen legenda kertoo Valentinuksen kehottaneen nuoria miehiä kieltäytymään armeijaan menosta ja pysymään kotona vaimonsa luona. Neuvot eivät miellyttäneet roomalaisia sotapäälliköitä, ja he vangitsivat yhteiskunnan uhaksi koetun rakkauden puolesta taistelijan. Lopulta keisari Marcus Aurelius tuomitsi Valentinuksen kuolemaan, ja hän kuoli kristittynä marttyyrina 14. päivänä helmikuuta. Pyhän Valentinuksen vankeusajoilta periytyy myös tapa muistaa rakastaan ja ystäviään. Kun Valentinus vangittiin, kiitolliset sotamiesten vaimot lähettivät hänelle kaltereiden taakse kukkia ja lahjoja myötätunnon merkiksi. Vielä kuoleman jälkeenkin rakastavaiset pitivät pyhimystä suojelijanaan ja hänen kuolinpäivästään tuli rakastavaisten ja ystävyyden päivä.
Jeesus Kristus kutsuu seuraajiansa myös ystäviksi: ”Suurempaa rakkautta ei kukaan voi osoittaa, kuin että antaa henkensä ystäviensä puolesta. Te olette ystäviäni, kun teette sen minkä käsken teidän tehdä. En sano teitä enää palvelijoiksi, sillä palvelija ei tunne isäntänsä aikeita. Minä sanon teitä ystävikseni, olenhan saattanut teidän tietoonne kaiken, minkä olen Isältäni kuullut.” (Joh. 15:13-15)
Ystävänpäivä 14.2. on tänä vuonna samalla myös tuhkakeskiviikko, jolloin aloitamme neljäkymmentä päivää kestävän paastonajan, niin kuin Jeesus vietti erämaassa neljäkymmentä päivää yksinäisyydessä paastoten (Matt. 4:1-11). Paastonajan alkupuoli korostaa parannuksen tekemistä, lähimmäisen rakkauden toteuttamista ja rukouselämän syventämistä. Sen loppuosa, varsinkin pyhä viikko, keskittyy Jeesuksen kärsimyshistorian seuraamiseen ja siten päättyy riemulliseen pääsiäisyön messuun ylösnousemuksen kunniaksi. Koko paastonaika auttaa meitä valmistautumaan tähän suureen ilon ja toivon juhlaan, Herramme synnistä ja kuolemasta saavuttamaan voittoon, ylösnousemukseen. Paasto johdattaa uskovia virittäytymään pääsiäisen salaisuuden viettoon kasteen muistamisen ja katumuksenteon kautta (SC 109). Näin meistä tulee myös Jeesuksen ja muiden ihmisten hyviä ystäviä, niin kuin Jeesus on aina ollut hyvä ystävä kaikille ihmisille, varsinkin syntisille ja heikoille. Onhan Jeesus tunnettu evankeliumissa ”publikaanien ja muiden syntisten ystävänä” (Matt. 11:19).
Nyt paastonaika antaa meille suotuisan liturgisen ajan syventyä Kristuksen pelastavaan ystävyyteen ja pyrkiä toteuttamaan sen vaikutusta elämässämme. Jeesuksen sanoihin perustuva paastonajan motto ”Tehkää parannus ja uskokaa evankeliumi” ilmaisee paastonajan merkityksen. Syntisten ystävänä hän kutsuu meitä kääntymykseen ja tarjoaa meille kääntymyksen armon. Hengellisessä ja moraalisessa elämässä tapahtuva kääntymys ilmenee ennen kaikkea paluuna Jumalan luo koko sydämestä. Samalla se tuo toivon Jumalan laupeudesta ja luottamuksen hänen armonsa apuun. Se eroaa täysin ahdistuneesta syyllisyyden tunteesta. Kääntymys ei oikeastaan ole tunteen asia, vaan on pikemminkin uskon ja tahdon toimintaa. Se on maltillista ja samalla johdonmukaista: ihminen tietää olevansa syyllinen, tahtoo parantaa tapansa ja luottaa Jumalan hyvyyteen, Jeesuksen ystävyyteen.
Kaikki paaston viettämisen tavat pyrkivät samaan, ihmisen sisäiseen puhdistumiseen ja uudistumiseen, että hän voisi iloiten kohdata ylösnousseen Herransa ja elää hänen yhteydessään. Näin paastonaika avaa meille monia teitä, jotka kaikki johtavat meitä pääsiäisjuhlan iloon ja vapauteen. Nämä tiet ovat niin erilaisia, että jokainen voi löytää itselleen sopivia mahdollisuuksia. Toinen voi painottaa kasteen merkitystä, toinen taas omaa kutsumustaan ja kolmas katumusta, rukousta, itsekieltäymystä ja toisten auttamista. Tärkeää on se, että otamme vastaan omaan sydämeemme paastonajan päämäärän ja sovellamme sen ikäämme, työhömme ja omaan hartauteemme. Näin me rikastumme siitä aarteesta, joka on kätketty paastonaikaan.
Kirkossamme on nyt ainoastaan kaksi päivää, joihin liittyy abstinenssin ja paastoamisen velvollisuus, siis tuhkakeskiviikko ja pitkäperjantai; unohtamatta myöskään että paastonaikana kerätään paastouhria johonkin Suomen Caritaksen valitsemaan hyvään tarkoitukseen. Vain Jumalan rakkaudessa ja lähimmäisen rakkaudessa löytyy aito onnellisuus ja kestävä ystävyys.

Valentine's Day 14.2. takes us to Lent
Valentine's Day has been celebrated on February 14 in Finland since 1987. The background character of the celebration is St. Valentine, who lived in the 2nd century, the patron of lovers and the betrothed and the guarantor of a happy marriage. There are several legends about Saint Valentine. According to one legend, Valentine gave marriage to Roman soldiers without permission and thus acted against the warlords. The emperor had forbidden soldiers to get engaged and marry, after realising that men preferred to marry and stay at home with their families rather than seek glory and fame on the battlefield. Valentine was a man of love and wedded couples secretly in his own home. Another legend says that Valentine urged young men to refuse to go to the army and stay at home with their wife. The advice did not please the Roman military commanders, and they imprisoned the fighter for love, who was perceived as a threat to society. Valentine was eventually sentenced to death by the emperor Marcus Aurelius, and he died a Christian martyr on February 14. The custom of remembering loved ones and friends is also inherited from St. Valentine's imprisonment. When Valentine was captured, grateful soldiers' wives sent him flowers and gifts behind bars as a sign of sympathy. Even after his death, lovers considered him as their patron, and the day of his death became the day of lovers and friendship.
Jesus Christ also calls his followers friends: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:13-15)

The first half of Lent emphasizes repentance, love of neighbor and deepening the prayer life. The latter part, especially Holy Week, focuses on following the history of Jesus' suffering and thus ends with a joyful Easter Mass in honor of the Resurrection. The whole season of Lent helps us prepare for this great celebration of joy and hope, the victory of our Lord over sin and death, the Resurrection. Lent leads the faithful to tune into the celebration of the paschal mystery through the remembrance of baptism and penance (SC 109). In this way we also become good friends of Jesus and of other people, just as Jesus has always been a good friend to all people, especially sinners and the weak. After all, Jesus is known in the gospel as "the friend of publicans and other sinners" (Matt. 11:19).
Now Lent gives us a favorable liturgical time to deepen into the saving friendship of Christ and strive to actualize its influence in our lives. The Lenten motto, based on the words of Jesus, "Repent and believe the Gospel" expresses the meaning of Lent. As a friend of sinners, he calls us to conversion and offers us the grace of conversion. The conversion in the spiritual and moral life manifests above all as a return to God with the whole heart. At the same time, it brings hope in God's mercy and confidence in the help of his mercy. It is entirely different from an anxious feeling of guilt. Conversion is not really a matter of feeling, but rather an act of faith and will. It is moderate and at the same time consistent: one knows one is guilty, wills to mend one's ways, and trusts in the goodness of God, in the friendship of Jesus.
All the ways of Lenten celebration aim at the same thing, the inner purification and renewal of a person, so that he/she may joyfully meet the risen Lord and live in his fellowship. In this way, Lent opens up many paths for us, all of which lead us to the joy and freedom of the Easter celebration. These paths are so varied that each one can find opportunities that suit him or her. One may emphasize the importance of baptism, another on his/her own vocation, and a third on repentance, prayer, self-denial and helping others. What matters is that we take the purpose of Lent into our own hearts and apply it to our age, our work and our own devotion. This is how we get rich from the treasure that is hidden in Lent.
In our Church there are now only two days with the obligation of abstinence and fasting, i.e. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, not forgetting that during Lent we collect a fasting offering for a good cause chosen by Caritas Finland. Only in the love of God and the love of neighbor can we find true happiness and lasting friendship.
